Exercise

The McCrorey Family YMCA Wellness Director organizes Charlotte REACH 2010 exercise programs. This intervention has promoted exercise as a mode of prevention and treatment for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Because of the numerous barriers related to becoming and remaining physically active, the exercise intervention elected to bring exercise classes to the residents in the Northwest Corridor.

Land and Water Exercise Classes

The YMCA offers 14 separate classes each week for target community residents. Five of these classes are designated specifically for senior citizens. Senior aerobic classes are very low impact or chair aerobics classes. The remaining four classes are for people of all ages and fitness levels. These classes are low impact aerobics, step aerobics, and toning. Land and water exercise classes are held at four target community locations:

McCrorey Family YMCA
3801 Beatties Ford Road

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday noon aerobics class.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday Chair Aerobics Class 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Tuesday and Thursday we offer water aerobics at 6:30 and 7:30pm.

H.O.P.E. and P.O.P
Helping Overweight People Embrace and Peeling Off the Pounds - Monthly weight management group. Discussion with a therapist, health topics, group support, goal setting and wellness measures. (6 week program - offered quarterly)

Diabetes Support Group
Monthly support group sponsored by REACH 2010 for those with diabetes (1st Monday of every month from 1:00pm-2:00pm)

Lab Day
Lipid profile and blood glucose. Appointments preferred. (1st Tuesday of every month from 7:00am - 10:00am). The cost is $25 for the lipid profile or $30 for both test.

Wellness Series (Lunch and Learn)
New and interesting health topics discussed each month with physicians, nutritionists, nurses, etc. (1st Wednesday of every month from 11:45am - 12:30pm). No lunch and learns during July and August.

Various Community Events
Family Fun Days (quarterly), Give Thanks? Thanksgiving Dinner (November), Community Health Screenings (Varies, On-Going)

Phillip O'Berry Center - 440 Tuckaseegee Road
Phillip O. Berry Center offers a Tuesday and Thursday evening aerobics class from 6:00-7:00pm.

West Charlotte Recreation Center - 2400 Kendall Drive
West Charlotte Rec. Center offers Monday, Wednesday, and Friday senior aerobics from 10:30-11:30am, and a Monday & Wednesday Aerobics Class 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Greenville Recreation Center - 1330 Spring Street
Greenville Rec. Center offers a Tuesday and Thursday senior aerobics class from 10:00 - 11:00am
