Smoking Cessation

"Commit to Quit"

The "Commit to Quit" smoking cessation contest occurs each year to help celebrate people that have quit smoking. This contest provides a $500 cash prize for a person who "kicks the habit."

Public Awareness

Saturating the community with the knowledge of why tobacco use is harmful and the tools to be able to overcome nicotine addiction has been a major focus of the smoking cessation intervention. Information has been placed in various locations throughout the Northwest Corridor to address those persons who can quit smoking with very little outside help and support. Materials and information with quit tips, a local resource guide, and other support information has been provided to physician offices and clinics, the Public Library, Neighborhood Recreational Centers, the Health Department and the Northwest Neighborhood Service Center. This information is also made available to the Lay Health Advisors whom have been instrumental in laying the foundation of creating community awareness around the issue of tobacco.

Community cessation sessions and support groups

Smoking cessation classes are conducted for residents at the target community's public library and community centers. The component provides materials, resources and information on tobacco use prevention and cessation questions and referrals made to the support groups and classes on cessation.
